Elk is about twenty miles north of Point Arena, perched above the sea stacks of Greenwood State Beach. It is a former lumber-shipping town, and much of what stands today dates back to that era — narrow-lot homes, inns and cottages built with old-growth redwood and very few right angles left in them.

Working on Elk's older buildings takes patience. Floors have settled, framing was sized by eye, and past repairs are layered on top of each other.
